ProGuard - Residential Oil Tank Coverage

Oil releases are very rare, but they do occur in tanks underground, aboveground, and even in the basement. That's why Oilheat companies choose ProGuard.

ProGuard is coverage for your customers' oil storage tanks that protects against the problems associated with a release, should it ever occur. It affordably provides the peace of mind your customers deserve. And it ensures that any problems will be handled in a way that protects the environment.

  • have been perfected over several years, drawing on the experiences of over 50,000 Oilheat customers
  • are offered on a national basis, at very reasonable rates, to a large pool of participating Oilheat dealers
  • are available to any residential customer with an active oil tank that holds no more than 4,000 gallons, and who receives oil on Automatic Delivery. (Abandoned tanks are not eligible.)

ProGuard Program Overview

    1. Distribution
    • Distribution offered through participating oil dealers

    • $100,000 On Site-Cleanup per Release

    • $2,500 Voluntary Pull (no coverage for Voluntary Pulls the first year)
    5. Coverage Summary
    • Cleanup of fuel oil which has been accidentally released from the fuel oil system and has been discovered and reported during the term of the policy. Releases from piping are also covered.
    • Repair or Replacement of a fuel oil tank, which is part of the fuel oil system, caused by an accidental release. The maximum amount is $1,400, which includes labor, charges involved to reconnect new tanks, and new parts such as pipes nozzles, gauges or lines.
    6. Summary of Terms and Conditions
    • The customer must report a release to his/her Dealer within 24 hours of discovery.
    • The Fuel Oil System must be an active system.
    • Above or below ground tanks are covered.
    • The tank must be used for Heating Oil purposes only.
    • Cleanup costs include treatment, removal and disposal of contaminated soil.
    • Costs include disposal of oil tank.
    • There is a $1,000 sublimit for post-cleanup site restoration (grass reseeding, landscaping).
    • Specialized services are offered associated with implementation of remediation.
    • The policy is transferable to new owner.
    • The cost of the Policy is non-refundable.
    • Repair or Replacement of Property must be with like kind and quality.
    7. Summary of Major Exclusions
    • The cost of lost oil from the tank
    • Cleanup of site beyond regulatory environmental standards
    • Cleanup costs incurred prior to the effective date of the Policy
    • Cleanup of heating oil tanks with capacity greater than 4,000 gallons
    • Cleanup of fuels or substances other than No. 2 heating fuel or kerosene
    • Costs for cleanups from abandoned or decommissioned tanks
    • Costs to investigate a suspected release
    • Third Party Liability (this exclusion does not apply in New York)
    • Cleanup Costs to groundwater
    • Testing or removing a tank without 72 hour prior notification to the Dealer
    • Customer does not remain a heating oil customer for 365 days after notifying us of an accidental release
    • Releases taking place during the loading or unloading process from a motor vehicle or trailer
    • Releases that are the direct result of the negligent installation of the tank or piping
    • Voluntary Pulling of Tank in first year of coverage
